Caaveiro Monastery

This monastery was built in the middle of the lonely and impressive landscape of Fragas do Eume and the first references we have of it date back to 936. The feature that makes it different is its lack of a cloister to centralize the monastic life. Another important point is the place where it is located, very appropriate for lonely retirements due to its isolation in the middle of the lush forest, on a huge promontory over the Eume River. Undoubtedly, this is a singular place in complete harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Nowadays the Monastery is property of the Deputación da Coruña, that made a strong investment to restore all of the buildings of this monastery. The visits to the monastery are for free, but due to the the restoration works, those visits are always guided and for groups.

  Moeche Castle

The history of Moeche is focused around this castle, that was possibly built under the command of García Rodríguez de Valcárcel, thanks to the feudal favours he was given by King Enrique II of Castilla. In its walls can be observed fine coats of arms, belonging to families like Osorio, Enríquez and Castro de Lemos. Part of the permanent exhibition we can visit in the castle is focused on these families.

This castle is closely related to the riots of the Irmandiños (Revueltas Irmandiñas) of the XV century. The documentary references tell the destruction of the castle by the Irmandiños and the sentences that made them rebuild it after being defeated. The exhibition lodged in the castle includes a short film about those events. Each year, at the end of August, takes place the Irmandiño Festival in the nearness of the castle. In this festival it is recreated the capture of the castle by the Irmandiños.

Andrade Castle

From the tower of this castle, also known as Leboreiro or Andrade, we have the best view of the area. The scene covers Ares, Ferrol and Coruña stuaries.

The origins of the castle are related to Fernán Pérez de Andrade, who ordered its construction in 1369, despite the opposition of Santa María de Sobrado priory. The works were even stopped because of this confrontation and were not completed until 1377, with the condition of paying an annual tax of 10.000 maravedíes to the priory for renting.

The castle played an important role during the Revueltas Irmandiñas, being virtually demolished in 1467. In the first Revuelta Irmandiña it was attacked by troops of Alonso de Lanzós, who was finally defeated  by Nuno Freire de Andrade. Legend has it that, he was cut his right hand and, after beíng one hundred days confined in a dungeon, he was buried alive, standing up within a three meters wide wall.

Andrade Tower

The historic downtown of Pontedeume is a good example of the medieval architecture with steep and narrow streets, flanked by arcades. This is a crowded area where we can find a big number of inns and restaurants to enjoy the local gastronomy. There are various quite well-conserved medieval buildings like the Pazo de Raxoi archbishop or San Agustín Convent.

The former Pazo dos Condes, dated back to the XIV century, only conserves the Andrade Tower, with a singular square plant that is crowned by battlements. In the south wall base there is a crest with the 18 flags seized to the french enemy by Fernán Pérez de Andrade in Semínara in 1503, the six circles that represent Castro de Lemos family and the bar of Andrade family. An angel holds the inscription “Nolite Nocere”: do not damage. At present, the Tower lodges the Andrade´s Interpretation Centre and the Pontedeume Tourist Office.

Inside the Tower we can find the Interpretation Centre of the Andrades, the medieval family that dominates this territory during the XIV, XV and XVI centuries. The Castle of Pontedeume was one of the few castles that resisted the popular "Revoltas Irmandinhas" during the XV century.

Monfero Monastery

Monfero Convent is one of the best examples of monastic life in Galicia. It was founded by benedictine monks in  1135, and was later transferred to the Cistercian Order. The vast extension of territory under their control, from Ortigueira to Betanzos, shows their socioeconomic, political and cultural power.

Monfero Monastery is also known as Virxe da Cela Convent. It gets this name, as it is reflected in the Tumbo of Monfero, because the Virgin performed the miracle of exorcizing a girl who had not found a remedy for her problem in any other sanctuary.

One of the outstanding features of this architectonic complex is the barroque facade of the church. It was built between 1622 and 1656 and it is decorated as a  chessboard. Inside the church, besides the stone altarpiece, built in 1666,  stand out three sarcophagus of Andrade Family, dated back to XV century.
